  • A “Hello World” from Apostrophe Industries

After years of conducting design services and creative consulting under various DBAs, I finally made things a bit more official with the creation of Apostrophe Industries, LLC in January.

There’s an excitement that comes with starting something anew — all potential futures intact. My brain is already firing on all cylinders with ideas regarding the company’s look/feel/identity.

    Can’t wait to share more.

  • Jersey Project

For what seems like eons, I’ve wanted to put together a cycling jersey for the South By Southwest staff to better represent at charity rides and races.

  • first peek at shoegeezer.com

Frankly, I’m not sure the world needs another music blog. Despite these very valid concerns, Adrienne and I have embarked on a little project to document another era:

“We melted down a vintage Fender Jazzmaster (Lake Placid Blue of course), a Yamaha FX500 effects processor, a box of cassette tapes circa 1991, an unknown number of random pills from the medicine cabinet, five Boss RV-3 pedals, a pair of ‘monkey boots,’ a packet of grape Kool-Aid powder and a single strand of Kevin Shields’ hair — the resultant machine produces exactly one song a day.

And we share that one song with you right here on shoegeezer.com. Because volume is wasted on the young.”

It’s been a fun and nostalgic journey so far. Stay tuned for more.

  • goodbye facebook

You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.” Morpheus, The Matrix

I’ve thought long and hard about this one, but today I deactivated my Facebook account.

  • rockthatfont.com v2.0

rockthatfont.com Call it “2.0” or whatever buzzword of your choosing, but I’m excited to reveal that we recently launched a new site design for rockthatfont.com.

We’ve implemented Typekit and a highly-customized premium WordPress theme from Shaken & Stirred. We hope this design will allow you to more easily deep-dive into our archived content and enjoy the splendor of the album covers themselves.

Things are still very much a work in progress, so please don’t hesitate to let me know your thoughts and feedback.

  • back to the futur en seine

Just a little video archive of my recent 20-minute presentation at the Futur en Seine conference in Paris, now with 73% more jet lag:

  • the tangled social web we weave

I’m always surprised when folks inquire about whether or not to integrate social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook into their website. Many still express a concern for control, not realizing that their community likely shapes their brand more than they do. And for 9 out of 10 of these concerned clients, these online platforms are where most of their target audience is spending their time. Shaping (or not shaping enough as the case may be) identities 24/7, 365 days a year.

If you are not actively collaborating with your community to develop your product, service or experience — you are behind the ball. In this day and age, your clients/customers/consumers expect nothing less than a two-way street.

After all, it’s what good relationships are made of.

With this approach in mind, I wanted to give a quick heads up that Rock That Font has recently added a new Facebook page to better foster community interaction and discussion (along with our Twitter account of course).

Feel free to spark a discussion about your favorite records and fonts, as well as give us some “Like” if you so desire.

  • no time like the presentation

a quick thanks to everyone who came out this evening for my little presentation on sxsw interactive at the austin forum. i was honored to pinch hit for hugh.

note to self: i have been informed that pie charts are no longer cool. or at least, not good data visualization… to which i must wholeheartedly agree. hmm… if only there was more time and sleep available as of late.

in any case, i thought i would share my slides — successfully created at the very last-minute thanks to sliderocket

  • doing more by doing less

“jack of all trades, master of none… though often better than a master of one.” – adam savage, mythbusters[*]

there’s a lot of talk these days about whether twitter and other micro-blogging services have killed blogs. while i tend to agree this is very much exaggerated, my own online publishing behaviors have suggested otherwise. (allow me to now disclaim the obvious: i’ve never considered myself a blogger.) in any case, i must now admit i am drinking a good amount of “twitterade.” which brings me to another pattern of “less is more” that has been emerging since the summer… (more…)

  • fifteen pumps, two breaths

recently one of my close friends decided to play a little practical joke on me by creating a fake myspace page — complete with a ridiculous soundtrack, numerous porn stars as my closest friends and a proclamation of my bisexuality. oddly enough, details such as these didn’t tip off the vast majority of my friends and family (which i can only hope is a testament to the well-crafted mix of fact and fiction). i discovered the covert operation only after another friend and co-worker stormed into my office to inquire as to why i had not yet invited her to be my “friend.” (more…)
